Some of the rare opals on this site were found at Lightning Ridge, the home of the famous black opal. All of them come from the hot dusty outback of Australia.  The old opal miners found them with just a pick, a shovel and a leather bucket. They lived on rabbits and tinned beef and carried their water for miles to the opal mines.
